Are 4D number plates legal?

Yes. ‘4D’ style number plates are fully road legal, as long as they follow some important rules.

To be road legal, your number plates must:

  • Have a backing made from a reflective material.

  • Display solid black characters on a white or yellow background.

  • Not feature a background pattern. (Logos or a honeycomb pattern are common)

  • Use the Charles Wright font, and be 50mm wide and 79mm tall.

  • Feature the company name and postcode of the Registered Number Plate Supplier in the bottom centre, and the name of the material manufacturer, as well as the British Standard code in the bottom right.

As quoted directly from the Gov.UK website: “Characters on a number plate can be 3D.

As you may already know, the term ‘4D’ is just an industry standard name to differentiate 3D Gel Resin and 4D Laser Cut number plates. 4D plates are still regarded as 3D, and therefore are permitted under current UK law. As all of the number plates that we manufacture at Utopia Plates meet these requirements, all of our number plates are fully road legal and have been verified by the DVLA themselves upon visiting our premises.

When using a pair of 3D gel or 4D laser cut number plates on your vehicle, you should not have any problems with the Police, MOT testing stations, VOSA or the DVLA, so long as they meet the above requirements.
