Why do I need to show my documents when having number plates made up?
When you have number plates produced by a legal Registered Number Plate Supplier (RNPS), they’ll ask you to provide one document which can identify you and second document which proves your entitlement to have the plates made up for that registration.
The reason behind this is to stop criminals from producing cloned plates, which can be used to imitate other vehicles on the road when used for nefarious purposes. For example, criminals may put your registration on a stolen car if it matches the colour, make and model!
To stop this from happening, a legal RNPS will request these two documents from you to ensure that the produced number plates will be going to the correct person. Additionally, providing the documents allows the RNPS to record the details from the two documents so that if the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) wants to check whether the RNPS produced a certain plate, or who it was produced for, they can do so.
