How do I get a private registration to put on my car?
So; you’ve decided you’d like to treat your pride and joy (your car, that is!) to a set of personalised number plates, a private registration. So where do you go from there? First of all, you have to purchase the registration from an appropriate source, be it straight from the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) or from a third-party reseller of registrations.
The first port of call would be the DVLA, to see if you can get the registration that you’re after direct from them. Visit their site at this link to start your search for your new private registration. If you can’t find the number plate of your dreams on there, you may want to look at the third party suppliers as they may offer it for sale.
Some third-party personalised registration sellers that we recommend are:
So now you’ve bought your desired registration, how do you get plates made up? Well first you need to wait for your V750 certificate of entitlement to arrive - this may come in electronic form if you bought directly from the DVLA, or it may come in a paper form if bought via a third-party seller.
Once you have your certificate of entitlement, you can show this to a Registered Number Plate Supplier (RNPS), such as Utopia Plates, to have your plates produced. The cost of your new plates will depend on the style that you purchase.
Don’t forget: you’ll need to tell your car insurance provider that you are changing the registration number on the vehicle to your new one.
And of course, at the end of it all, you’re going to want to get yourself a pair of lovely premium 3D Gel or 4D laser cut acrylic number plates to show off your new registration - for that, you know who to go to: Utopia Plates! Check out our plates below to get yourself a pair.
