How can I transfer my private registration to my new car?
So, it’s new car day coming up soon and you want to move your private registration from your current car to the new one, or perhaps you just want to take the personalised number plate off your current car in preparation for getting a new car?
Well, the process for doing this is pretty simple thankfully!
You have two options: fill out a form (V317) and send it to the DVLA, or use their online service.
If you choose to go the good old-fashioned route, you first need to go to the DVLA website and download the V317 “Application to keep a vehicle registration number” form. Print this out, so you may start filling it out. Once your form is completed, you’ll need to send it off with one of the proposed payment methods - we suggest using a cheque.
Alternatively, go for the modern route and fill out the online form. This is quicker and easier in the long run. You can pay for the service online as well.
After you have taken your private registration off the old car, you’ll receive a new V5C logbook with the replacement registration number and a V778 retention document which entitles you to assign the private registration to another vehicle.
